Language: Today you get to kick back and do a Word Ladder! Have you ever done one? It's like a fun word puzzle. You start at the bottom of the ladder and follow the clues as you climb... Have fun!

Science: I can't let the week go by without checking in with our buddy, Mystery Doug! Today is the first day of May and the birds are a chirpin'! A boy named DeMario asks Mystery Doug why birds lay eggs in spring. It is an awesome episode with lots of close-ups of baby birds and an inside look at some of their amazing nests! Why do Birds Lay Eggs in Spring?

A Dog's Biggest Fan!

Gia believes strongly that dogs are better than cats! She has asked me to share her persuasive paragraph with you! Way to go, Gia!

Wednesday, April 29th

Language: We are going to continue exploring text features today. If you didn't get a chance to watch yesterday's video about text features, click this link to watch it now: What are Non-Fiction Text Features? Text Features are important because they help the reader to quickly find important information. Two other text features that weren't mentioned in yesterday's video are headings and subheadings.

Now I would like you to read the article below about blue whales and fill in the blanks to label the appropriate text features. These are ginormous animals. They are around 30 metres long (longer than two school buses). The blue whale has a mass of around 6,000 kids your age - that is mind boggling!

If you want to learn more about blue whales, I assigned you this book on Epic (if you need the class code, ask one of your parents to e-mail me):

Tuesday, April 28th

Language: Before the March Break, we spent quite a bit of time exploring fiction and you even wrote your own narrative. We learned that a good story includes characters, settings, dialogue and a plot (usually a problem that needs to be solved). This week we are going to explore non-fiction text features. Let's start by watching this very informative video: What are Non-Fiction Text Features?

Now I would like you to complete this Fiction and Non-Fiction Sort. No need for a printer. Just make two columns on a sheet of paper and sort the words.

Language:
Today you are going to work on a final piece of persuasive writing. Here is an anchor chart of how to be successfully persuasive. It is always a good idea to include at least three reasons in your writing.

Here is a list of possible persuasive writing topics. Choose one of them. You can choose to write your paragraph as a letter to someone (Dear Ms. Wills, Dear Mom, etc.) or as a paragraph. If you have another topic in mind (Why Skylanders are the best, Why LEGO is more fun than Barbies..), go for it!
  • All classrooms should have a class pet
  • There should be no homework
  • People should be fined for dropping litter
  • Convince your family why you need a new pet
  • Imagine in the future, you can live on land or water, which one would you choose and why?
  • You can choose one superpower to help others: fly or stop time. Which one do you choose and why?

Enjoy your weekend!

We Love Earth!

I found this terrific picture of George on Twitter holding up the beautiful picture he shared with us during our Google Meet yesterday.

Check out Xander's Earth Day Poem! He used Pic Collage to add pictures! Very cool!

Gia also shared her powerful and descriptive poem as well:

I also shared my Earth Day poem with you via e-mail and Google Drive. Did you find it? Try doing that if you haven't yet! I also included some photos of nature I have seen in the past little while during my bike rides and walks!
That's me waving at all of you in my parka - it sure was a cold and crisp Earth Day!

Wednesday, April 22nd

Good morning!

Have you even stopped to wonder how old the earth is? To help celebrate this special day, I would like you to watch this Mystery Doug - it explores clues in nature that let us know how old the earth is - it makes me feel like a spring chicken! Also, there is a super cool bonus box at the end that looks at some creative ways to re-use plastic.

I have also assigned the following book for you to read on Epic Books:

After, I would like you to get some fresh air (it could be from an open window), use your senses and complete the following Earth Day Poem. I won't include the sense of touch to keep us all safe! I am going to do this homework today as well!

I see ______________
I hear _____________
I smell ____________
I feel ______________

Rainbow Magic!

Abrahim and his sister Ava were really inspired by last week's Mystery Doug episode about rainbows. They painted a rainbow on their window with a positive message for the world.

Looks awesome. I love looking at the uplifting messages and pictures in people's windows during my daily walks! Did you put any up in your window that you would like to share on the blog? We would love to see them!

Abrahim also created a rainbow using crayons and a hair dryer - very cool! Thank you for sharing!

Friday

Good morning!

Here are a few ideas for your Friday...

Language: Cats or Dogs? Head over to the Scholastic Website to read an article about which of these animals make a better pet. A girl named Michelle will try to persuade you why cats do while Logan provides convincing reasons that dogs are best. Who do you agree with? You don't have to do the writing activity at the bottom of the page but there is  a fun quiz  that asks you questions to determine what kind of pet you would be based on your likes and dislikes...I was a little upset with my results...

If you would like to do an Easter-themed wordsearch, here is a link: Easter Resurrection Wordsearch

Science: I can't let the week go by without a link to Mystery Doug! How is a Rainbow Made?

Have a super weekend!

Thursday

Good morning!

Today we are going to take a break from persuasive writing and explore three homophones: words that sound the same but have different spellings and meanings.

I would like you to use this helpful poster to complete the following worksheet:

I also added an assignment to your books on Epic Books . It's called Animal Jokes and many of the jokes use homophones as their punchlines. You will be a comedian at the dinner table tonight! Here is an example:

  • Why did the lamb run over the cliff? He didn't see the ewe-turn!

Tuesday

Good morning boys and girls,

I hope you enjoyed a nice long Easter weekend with your families and that you took a break from distance learning!

Language: I signed each of you up for  Epic Books. I sent your parents an e-mail with your log-in information on Thursday night. I can see that a few of you have already started using it. It has lots of different books, audiobooks and videos. I assigned you a little video about punctuation which I would like you to watch. You will see it when you login.

Your Word Wall Words this week are:
  • about
  • before
  • when
  • where
  • enough

After copying the words down on a piece of paper, try printing them on someone's back using your fingers and see if they can guess what word you are printing!

Thursday

Good morning boys and girls!

I am so excited that your other teachers and I get to meet with you this morning at 10 on our first Google Meet. If you are not able to make it, don't worry. Hopefully we can have another one in the near future!

1. Language:  Today, you're going to continue what you started yesterday when you pretended to be a cow requesting an item from Farmer Brown. You are going to pick your three best reasons for needing this item and fill out the plan below. If you don't have a printer - don't worry about it! All you need to do is divide your paper into 5 sections like you see below. The first box is for what you (as a cow), want from the farmer. The 3 middle boxes are for each of your reasons. The last box is to restate what you want from the farmer!

2. Mr. K's Math Corner

Religion: As today is Holy Thursday, I would like you to watch this video about The Last Supper.

Have a wonderful Easter weekend with your families! I will not post any suggested activities on Friday and Monday as it's a long weekend. Happy Easter!

Tuesday, 7 April 2020

Wednesday

Good Morning,

Today we are going to explore persuasive writing! First of all, check out this amazing video of the book Click, Clack, Moo, Cows That Type

Those cows sure did persuade that farmer to get what they wanted. Have you ever managed to persuade somebody? Let's figure out how those cows were so successful by reflecting on the following questions...

  • Why did the cows send the letters to Farmer Brown?
  • What are the reasons that the cows used to get the blankets from Farmer Brown?
  • How did the Farmer respond to the cow's letters? How did his response change throughout the story?

Maybe you want something other than blankets, use your imaginations and come up with some good reasons. We will continue this tomorrow!
