Class Reward!

The 2/3W crew has done it again! Through their class collaborative efforts, they have completed the Paperclip Chain for the second time this school year! This means that they have earned a class reward tomorrow afternoon! Students are welcome to wear their pj's, and to bring toys, games and/or electronics to school tomorrow. There will also be Chromebooks available for students who don't bring in electronics (no pressure!). The electronics will be in our locked classroom during recesses and lunch.

Pink Shirt Day!

Tomorrow (Wednesday) is Pink Shirt Day! Students and staff are encouraged to wear pink to stand up to bullying in schools!

Narrative Trailers

This afternoon, the students got a chance to explore the iMovie trailer app on the school iPads. It's a bit of a leaning curve! Once their trailers are complete, I will post them on the Blog - stay tuned!

Citizenship Project

Over the next few months, SMY will be participating in a school wide Arts project highlighting and celebrating the multiculturalism that exists at our school. Here is an impressive list of the countries represented by the students and their families in the 2/3W cast. What a diverse and awesome group they are!

Today we voted that our class will focus on Brazilian culture.  Alice and Lucas will guide us as we learn to samba and speak Portuguese!

Swim to Survive Re-Booked!

Great news! The students will have a chance to go to their last Swim to Survive class next Friday, March 9th at Canterbury Pool. The students were thrilled when they hear this news this afternoon!

Bring Your Published Books Back to School!

Tomorrow afternoon, the students will be creating iMovie Trailers to promote their books. If your child proudly brought home their published book over the weekend, can you please remind them to bring it back to school in the morning? Thanks!

First Round of Published Authors...

Although the students were very disappointed that their last Swim to Survive class was cancelled due to the Snow Day, it did give them an opportunity to get lots of work done on their narratives. Quite a few of our young authors published their books today!

Next week, the students will make iMovie trailers to promote their books. Then the long awaited 2018 2/3 Narrative Book Tour will commence...

Thanks to Braeden, Alice, Neela, Brye-Anna and Joelle for making our Dutch team flag! We are so looking forward to tomorrow's active afternoon! Thank you to Parent Council for providing each student with a hot dog and a cup of hot chocolate. A big thank you as well to members of the Ottawa Police Force who will be serving the students these goodies!

Multiplication Stations Part 2!

Max and Dontay making arrays at the Lego Station.

Here is a closer look at the Island Conquer game. Lilah could not find any 3 by 6 squares left on the playing grid, but then she used 18 counters to figure out what other factors have a product of 18....
She was thrilled to find that 2X9=18 and staked her turf with her blue marker on the grid!

Happy Family Day Weekend!

Multiplication Stations Part 1!

Inspired by Mrs. Sabourin's use of stations, I decided to run "Multiplication Stations" in class today. The students got to complete one station today and will visit three more next week. They seemed to really enjoy their stations and worked so well together!

These four smiley cuties got to complete puzzles and play games while practising their multiplication skills on the Chromebooks! Sofia and Hannah are at the 4th station in the background - they are playing a riveting game of Island Conquer - using dice and multiplication to cover more area on a grid!

Lucas, Joelle, Max and Dontay demonstrated their thinking by making arrays using paint dabbers!

Brye-Anna, Olivia, Breeona and Neela made arrays at the Lego station!

Looking forward to more hands-on learning next week!

Week at a Glance

Friday 9 February 2018

While the 3's are away, the 2's will play...

The Grade 2's and Mr. Pope's Grade 4 who were left behind from Swim to Survive got the chance to play with a ginormous sphere called a Kinball this afternoon. Mr. Thomas, the Board Physical Education Consultant, came to SMY to teach us some Kinball activities. What a treat!

3-D Solids!

The students had fun creating a variety of prisms and pyramids this morning using toothpicks and marshmallows. Some of the kids got ambitious and even made octagonal prisms! Once they completed a variety of solids, many of the students used their knowledge of triangulation to connect their solids into a larger work of art! Dontay created a boot, Braeden made a parking garage, and Lilah made a ....we're not quite sure!

Alice noticed that the cube was super squishy (made of squares) but that the triangle-based pyramid was much stronger!

Smile! It's Fri-Yay, Fry-Day, Friday!
