Talent Show Day and Time!

I goofed up on the blog yesterday and said that our class talent show was at 9:00 on Thursday - whoops! I meant to say 10 a.m. An extra hour for you to work on your act!

Tuesday, June 23

Good morning!

Today you get to make a poster with words of encouragement for the next group of students who will be coming into the 2/3W class. I promise to put up your posters in my class on the first day of school next year to inspire my new students! Think back to your first day in 2/3W. Were your nervous? Scared? Excited? I am always a little nervous on the first day of school even though I've been doing school for a really really long time. You can either share your poster with me via Google Drive or if you want to hang on to it and give it to me in September - that would be super too!

Monday, June 22

Welcome to your last week of the 2019-2020 school year - you did it! I know it has been a tough and unusual year!  This week, you will get a chance to reflect and to celebrate some of your accomplishments from the past school year! Today's assignment is a reflection:

Virtual Talent Show:
To celebrate the end of the year and our last virtual class meet, we will have a 2//3W Talent Show on Thursday at 10:00 a.m.  If you would like, you can prepare one act for our class show. Some ideas include: magic tricks, a musical performance, a karate kata - it is up to you! Be imaginative - you are all full of wonders! If you are feeling shy and just want to enjoy the show on Thursday, that is fine too. No pressure! I really hope to see all of you there - look for your invite in your Gmail account!

Friday, June 19th

Good morning!

Here is your last Friday assignment for the 2019-2020 school year!

Language:

Math: You get to play 2D Geometry Bump today. You will need a partner, a paperclip and Lego works really well for the towers.

Science:  In this Mystery Doug episode, Doug answers the question Why Do Snakes Shed Their Skin? In the Bonus Box, he explores other animals who have cool adaptations that protect them!

That's it! Have a super weekend!

Happy Birthday Michael!

Happy Birthday to Michael who turns 9 on Saturday! We are so looking forward to meeting you!

Thursday, June 18th

Good morning!

Language: Today we conclude our poetry unit with learning about Shape/Concrete Poems. These are poems that are written in the shape of the subject they describe. Here are a few examples:

Now it's your turn. Draw a simple picture and fill it in with words that describe it. Be creative and have fun!

Math: I created a 2D Geometry assignment just for you on Zorbit's Math. Just go to the student portal and click on Zorbit's to find it! Student Portal

That's it for today! Have fun and make sure to drink lots of water in this heat!

Tuesday, 16 June 2020

Wednesday, June 17th

Good morning!

Language: Today you get to make the good copy of yesterday's Bio Poem. Here is a template you are welcome to use. Ii includes a page to illustrate the subject of your poem. Together, the poem and illustration would make a nice gift. If you have written it about yourself, they might look great on your bedroom wall or door!

Math: Do you remember how to read a Venn Diagram? In today's activity, we are going to sort polygons according to their attributes, using a Venn Diagram. In Geometry, attributes are defining features that can be used to describe a shape and group it with other shapes. Some attribute examples include colour, # of sides, # of right angles, # of lines of symmetry. This sheet is really good exercise for your brains. Remember a good test for symmetry is to cut shapes out and fold them along the line of symmetry! If you are in Grade 2, do the red shapes plus the rhombus. If you are in Grade 3 or just want an extra challenge, do all the shapes!

If you forget how to use a Venn Diagram, here is a mini-video lesson to refresh your memory: How to use a Venn Diagram

Tuesday, June 16th

Good morning!

Before we get started with today's activities, I want to mention that this Friday, SMY will be hosting a Virtual Jump Rose for Heart. If you would like to participate, the details are in this letter: Virtual Jump Rope for Heart

Language: Today you are going to do the rough draft of a Bio Poem. Bio is short for Biography which means writing about a person's life. You can choose to do this about yourself or you can write one for somebody else (Father's Day idea, your mom, your sister, your grandfather...). Here is an example of a finished Bio Poem:

Here is the planning page. If you choose to do it about somebody else, the three words at the top will not describe you but will describe the person you choose.

Math: Let's continue exploring symmetry and shapes!

Have a wonderful day!

Good morning!

I hope you had a lovely weekend with your families. Check out this butterfly that befriended my flowers yesterday!

Now it's your turn to spot some symmetry:

Have a great day and check out examples of symmetry all around you!

Charlotte's Web Robots by Maya!

As I was  looking though my Google Drive yesterday, I found these wonderful versions of Charlotte's Web characters that Maya created for her area and perimeter assignment last week. They are terrific and reminded me of how much I love that book! If you haven't read it, I recommend it for your summer reading list!

Friday, June 12th

Happy Fun Friday!

I sure did love seeing so many of you yesterday at our Google Meet - you all gave me a boost for the rest of my day!

Language: We will continue with poetry next Tuesday. It's Word Ladder Friday:

Have an amazing weekend!

Thursday, June 11th

Good morning!

I am so looking forward to our Google Meet this morning at 10!

Language: It's Acrostic Poem day ! Check out this video lesson: Awesome Acrostics

Now it's your turn. Your word doesn't have to contain as many letters as the boxes on this page!

Math: Today we are going to shift our attention to geometry and learn about polygons. Start by watching this brief video: Polygons

In summary:

To complete the following sheet, remember that the # of sides determines the name of the shape which you will be able to figure out using the poster above. Also, vertex (vertices when plural) is a sophisticated Math word meaning corner: Polygons

Wednesday, June 10th

Tuesday, June 9th

Good morning!

Language: This week, you get to start writing some poems! Today we will learn about Haiku poems. Check out this link for an excellent mini-lesson: How to Write a Haiku Poem

To accurately figure out the number of  syllables in a word, I usually place my hand under my chin and slowly say the word. Each time my chin drops is one syllable. Here is a Haiku I wrote for you:

Sweet Students
2/3 W Kids
Minds sharp, hearts full of kindness,
Missing them each day!

Now it's your turn:

Math: In yesterday's video lesson, the teacher described parallel, intersecting and perpendicular lines. If you forget the details - no worries! This catchy song will help refresh your memory: Parallel, Perpendicular & Intersecting Lines Song

Now that you have that song in your head, you can complete the assignment below:

Have a super day!
Go outside and breathe fresh air,
Nature is God's gift!

Stump Smash the Robot

Graeme created Stump Smash the robot and calculated his perimeter and area. A Skylander robot by Graeme? What a surprise! Hee! Hee!

George's Lego Robot!

George used Lego to build a robot for last week's area and perimeter assignment. What an original and hands-on idea. Way to go, George!

Monday, June 7th

Good morning boys and girls,

I hope you had a relaxing weekend! I spotted a few butterflies, dragonflies and a ruby-throated hummingbird during my adventures in nature this weekend - these sightings were so exciting!

Language: Here are this week's word wall words:

  • terrible
  • favourite
  • doesn't (does not)
  • didn't (did not)
  • can't (cannot)
Use these words and choose five other word wall words to complete the sheet below. If you are struggling to find rhymes, check out this online rhyming dictionary: Rhyming Dictionary

Math: Today we are going to shift our attention to geometry and learn about right, acute and obtuse angles. I would like you to watch the following angle lesson.  You can stop the video at around the 5 minutes mark after the presenter explains these three types of angles: Types of Angles

In summary:

Now I would like you to complete this sheet: Acute, Obtuse or Right Angle?

That's it for today!
