Birthday BFF's!
Happy Birthday to Ria who celebrates her birthday today and to Lauryn who celebrated turning 9 this past weekend!
Reach for the Stars!
Congratulations to January's Reach for the Stars Recipients! Yafeat, Ria, Sahej & Lauryn! Ria earned the French Award and the others were highlighted for showing LOVE!
Sahej's name was also picked for the "What Would Jesus Do?" draw at the assembly.
Fly Guy Win Fall!
CJ was ecstatic today! Fly Guy Firefighter (his favourite) was added to the class Fly Guy collection! He also received a Firefighter tuque and trucks from a mysterious donor!
New Time for Skating on Thursdays!
We have decided to switch our skating time from morning to afternoon on Thursdays. The classes will go after lunch for 3rd block of the day (12:15). The mornings are kind of chilly so hopefully the sun will heat things up by the afternoon! Skating will replace Gym class on Thursdays!
Math Duo Tangs and 2D Geometry Tests!
The Math duo tangs are going home today with the 2D Geometry Practice Tests that the students wrote last week. They can review the 2D unit for the test on Thursday. This time, the kids don't have to bring the duo tangs back to school as they are full! They will be given a new Math duotang at school this week!

Warm Hearts!
Today we talked about the colour wheel: primary and secondary colours as well as warm and cool colours. The students then made heart-themed watercolours. The hearts were painted in warm colours while the background in cool colours. Josh observed that it was like our warm hearts in cold winter!

Terrific Turtles
This morning the students had to replicate a turtle made with 2D shapes. They then had to make the same turtle using the least number of 2D shapes and the greatest number of 2D shapes!

Interesting Conversations...
This week we learned that good dialogue moves narratives along and also helps to develop strong and interesting characters! After a couple of lessons about the proper use of quotation marks, the students had a chance to write some unique conversations...Here are a few completed ones!
Maker Mobile!
The students used lots of Math skills this morning at the Maker Mobile workshop.
Alec from The University of Ottawa led the workshop. Here he is explaining how a 3D printer works.
The students learned that the inside of a printed object is made up of tiny little plastic strings to make it strong (link to our solid structures unit in Science!).
The students' task was to build characters to fit into a car. They had to use measuring skills to determine how big to make their character.
Then they used the Tinkercad software to design their characters.

Geometry Links
In Math this week, we have been exploring the attributes of shapes. We have been talking about types of lines (parallel, intersecting, perpendicular) and types of angles (right, acute, obtuse). Check out these catchy tunes on YouTube that have helped us with our learning! They are also great for dancing!

▫On Friday, the primary classes will be participating in "Maker Mobile" workshops given by the Engineering Department of the University of Ottawa.
The Grade 3 classes will be participating in a 3D printing workshop. Here is a
brief outline of what we will be doing:
In this interactive workshop,
participants will have the opportunity to create their own 3D model in small
groups using Tinkercad, a user-friendly 3D modeling software. Next, they will
turn their virtual models into a reality using 3D printers. An overview of the
technology and its multitude of uses will also be covered in order to demystify
these tools.

Ms. Kendra!
Alex enjoying quiet reading with Ms. Kendra. Ms. Kendra will be with us for the next few weeks filling n for Mrs. Kelly and Mr. Andrews. She is fitting in very well with the 3W crew!

Symmetrical Designs!
This week in a Geometry, we have been talking about congruent and symmetrical shapes. Today's task involved creating a symmetrical design using patterning blocks!

3W Yogis!
Led by yogis Olivia and Lauryn, a few students who finished their work early did a bit of yoga today. It was such a hit that I found a "Yoga for Kids" session on YouTube and put it on for the kids. They were so into it - looks like yoga stretches are in 3W's future for 2017!

First Day Back and a Whole Bunch of (Charming) Resolutions!
It was so wonderful to see all the kids today! We got busy right away discussing resolutions...The students logged onto their Google accounts and started typing away about a variety of goals for 2017. It seems that quite a few of the 3W kids would like to learn how to skate this winter - good thing there is a rink outside SMY...we will have to plan a few ice capade adventures. The kids then created a collage out of their typed resolutions. The results are inspiring...
