This week's WORD WALL WORDS are:
▫almost ▫beautiful ▫friendly ▫how ▫was
▫ Our descriptive language unit is going to be lots of fun this week! The students will invent a monster and write a corresponding description. In Art, the students will then create a 3D version of their monster using plastecine!
▫ In Math, I am thrilled that the students have become quite proficient at conducting surveys, making pictographs and bar graphs, as well as at interpreting them. We will look at circle graphs this week as well as at some EQAO multiple choice data questions. The students will write their practice test by the end of the week.

▫This
Friday is the Dance-a-thon and the kids are welcome to bring their Halloween costumes for this event. Their
costume should not involve any masks or weapon-type props. The primary classes are scheduled to boogie down from 10:10-11:10! Should be exciting!

Conducting a Survey
As part of our Data Management Unit in Math, the students conducted a survey today asking their classmates whether they would rather fly in an airplane, a helicopter or a hot air balloon. They had to keep track of who they asked and plot the collected data on a bar graph. Check out these photos of them in action - they look very official with their clipboards!

May the Magnetic Force Be with You!
The students explored magnetic force today during Science class. They used magnetic force to separate paper clips from a cup of non-magnetic objects. The first time they were allowed to touch the paper clips with the magnet. The second time, they had to separate the paper clips by not touching them with the magnet.

Visualizing
Today we talked about how visualizing can be an effective strategy to connect to a text.
I then read them the two first stanzas of a very descriptive poem entitled My Neighbour's Dog. The students (and Mrs. Kelly) then drew what they visualized.
Once they had finished their drawing, I read the last stanza of the poem. It provides more details and has an interesting twist. The students then drew their new visualization based on the entire poem!

Home Resource Folder
Parents!
The Home Resource Folder went home today. It is this year's version of Homework! Let me know in your child's agenda if it didn't make it home to you tonight...I will make sure it gets to you tomorrow! Here is a copy of the letter describing its contents. This letter is in the front flap of the folder, on the backside of the Portable Word Wall.

Dear
Parents,
Today,
your child has brought home the Home
Resource Folder. This blue folder is to stay home all year. It is meant to
provide you with ideas and resources for Language and Math activities done at
home. Here is an outline of what is included in the folder:
·
Portable Word Wall: On the back of this
sheet is a list of all the grade 3 Word
Wall Words. Each week, I will assign
5 new words from this wall. I suggest
that your child highlights the new words each week on the wall. A list of various activities your child can do with these
words is also included in this folder (Spelling
Activities).
·
How to Choose “Just Right”
Books gives your child a guideline of how to choose
books at a level to match his or her reading abilities. When I Read provides a
review of good fix-up strategies to use when encountering challenging words.
·
The
Self-Selected Reading Log sheet as
well as the sheet Understanding
Non-Fiction and Fiction sheets are a
great resource to help with your child’s reading comprehension. The questions
on the Log sheet will encourage your
child to use reading comprehension strategies such as inferencing, visualizing
and synthesizing.
·
The
Math sheet gives the students a list
of key words used in addition and subtraction problems. It also has a hundreds
chart. The students are encouraged to practise counting by 2’s, 5’s, 10’s &
25’s up to 200.
Hope this resource is helpful!
