Metis Dot Paintings

Today we learned about the work of a Metis artist named Christi Belcourt. She uses 1000's of paint dots (that resemble traditional Metis beading) to create beautiful works of art inspired by nature. Here are a couple of her pieces:

The students then created some of their own spectacular dot painting. Many of them will continue working on their creations tomorrow afternoon - it gave us an appreciation of how time consuming this art form is. We saw an interview with Christi Belcourt in which she showed one of her pieces that was made up of more than 200,000 dots!

Blue Celery!

As these pictures show, our hypotheses about the celery experiment were confirmed! The water level went down and the celery turned blue!

Are Stems Like Straws?

Last we week we learned that stems are like straws for plants. They transport water and nutrients from the roots of a plant to their leaves. Today we placed some celery stalks in water tinted with blue food colouring and drew a line to mark the water level. The students hypothesized that by tomorrow, the water level would go down and that the leaves of the celery would turn blue...we will post Part 2 of the experiment tomorrow!

Bridge Building Showdown!

This morning, the students used their knowledge of different kinds of bridges (truss, arch and pillar) to design a paper bridge that needed to span 15 cm and support as many pennies as possible! They were allowed to use a maximum of 2 pieces of paper and were not permitted to use glue or tape! The students rose enthusiastically to this challenge!

Emily and Katherine's arch/truss bridge held the record with 82 pennies until Emmanuel's pillar/truss bridge managed to hold 86 pennies before collapsing! We will test a few more tomorrow afternoon!
