Floating Frankensteins and Friends

In our ongoing Science Unit about Forces, we explored Static Electric Force today and discovered that just like magnetism, static electricity can generate a push or pull without actually directly touching an object. Check out these floating Halloween-esque characters floating up due to static electrical force...cue the spooky music!

Student Council Elections

SMY is holding Student Council Elections this Friday for students from Grades 3 to 6. Students in each homeroom will vote for two class representatives. The role of the student reps will share student ideas and interests at council meetings with Mrs. Armstrong. The Grade 3 reps will be a voice for all the primary classes - big responsibility! Many of the 3W students expressed interest in running for these two positions. Interested students are asked to prepare a brief written speech to read to the class this Friday explaining why they would make an awesome 3W class rep!

Monster Mania!

The students created these incredible monsters today out of plasticine. I was so impressed by the focus and attention to detail they showed during this activity which highlighted their wonderful imaginations. Later this week, the students will write descriptive paragraphs about their monsters.

Sleepy Snoozy Cozy Coozy

Today I read the book Sleepy Snoozy Cozy Coozy by Judy Young to the students. The book uses rhyme and tongue-twisting adjectives to describe the sleeping habits and beds of various animals.

After the story, the students brainstormed words that described their beds and bedrooms. Tomorrow they will write their very own descriptive poems about their cozy beds!

Magnetic Force

Today we explored Magnetic Force as part of our Kinds of Forces unit in Science. The students had to separate paper clips from other objects and discuss why paper clips are magnetic. Here is a picture of Junior using magnetic force!

I Spy with My Little Eye...

Last week we started talking about the role of adjectives in descriptive writing. I read the students The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson which is rich with descriptive language; that Gruffalo is one scary and homely creature! Today the students were given a secret word which they had to describe without naming it. The other students had a chance to guess the object based on the description. Can you guess the following?
