Sprouting Bean Seeds!

During Science today, each student received three bean seeds which they loosely wrapped in a damp paper towel then placed in a hanging Ziploc in the class. We will humect the seeds daily and hopefully they will sprout by the end of the week. We will then plant the sprouts in soil. The students had to draw how their seeds looked today.

The students were asked to hypothesize whether a seed needs light to sprout. Joelle, Sofia and Emily then prepared three additional seeds which we placed in a dark cupboard. We will keep these seeds moist all week and see whether they need daylight to sprout...stay tuned!

Roarin' Good Aesop Plays!

Alrizha arrived at school this morning ready for her performance as a lion who is befriended by a mouse. Here she is practising her ROAR with Mr. Pope.

All the students had a chance to perform their plays in front of the class today. I was thrilled that they all knew their lines! We will perform the skits  for Mr. Pope and Mrs. Frangione's classes next Thursday, May 3rd.Simple props (homemade animal ears or tails) are welcome!

Fractions

This week we have been learning about fractions. The students used Cuisenaire Rods today to explore fractions of different lengths.

Congratulations to all the Grade 2 students who celebrated their First Communion today! Thank you to Ms. Morris who prepared them so well for this sacrament.

Sibling Picture Day!

I sure did love seeing the siblings in their fancy matching outfits today! I managed to snap a picture of these cuties as they lined up for their pictures before lunch!

Congratulations Ribeiro Family!

Congratulations to Lucas and his family - today they became official Canadian citizens! What a score for Canadians!

Passed on Pig!

Sadly, Colin was not persuaded to adopt a pet pig for our household. He flipped it back on the 2/3W crew and suggested that we adopt our very own Wilbur as a class mascot...

I wonder how the school board feels about pet pigs in the classroom?!

Tower Gardens

Ms. Gorman spoke to us today about the Tower Gardens in the library atrium. We learned why this aeroponic technology is terrific for the environment (local produce) and for northern climates! She also promised that we would get to taste test the lettuce next Tuesday!

St. Pat's Intermediate Band!

SMY was treated to a toe-tappin' concert this afternoon by St. Pat's Intermediate Band and Glee Club!

Rock, Paper, Scissors!

We took Rock, Paper, Scissors to a whole new level today during gym class today with Mrs. Frangione's class. Max managed to win one of the rounds!

Persuasive Pig Post!

This week, we have read a variety of persuasive texts and have learned that giving reasons and examples are essential when trying to persuade someone of your opinion. Today, we read a non-fiction text about pigs which dispelled many of the so called reasons that these cute little oinkers get such a bad rap. The students and I then penned a very persuasive letter to my husband warming him up to the idea of a new oinky pet. Can you spot the three reasons and examples we came up with? Will we persuade him?! Stay tuned....

Aesop Plays

Each student went home today with a one page script of an Aesop Fable stapled into their agenda. Next Thursday, the students will perform these fables for the rest of the class. Narrators are asked to practice reading their parts. Actors must memorize their dialogue for next week. Students are welcome (but not expected) to make or bring in simple props for their performances. We will eventually perform the skits for a few other classes! The groups will have a chance to rehearse together before next Thursday!

Earth Week!

Thank you to all the families who have sent in plastic bags for the Plastic Bag Grab Challenge! We watched a video today about how our recycled bags are being turned into really impressive decks! Plastic Grab Bag Week  has generated a lot of discussion in the class about the impact of our actions on our earth. Braeden shared a green tip with the rest of the school on the environment bulletin board this afternoon!

Icy Snow Day!

As this PicCollage from today suggests, the "Fab Five" who ventured to school today worked so hard all day! Looking forward to seeing the rest of the 2/3W crew tomorrow!

Jump Rope for Heart!

A HUGE thank you to Mme Mathieu and her team of Grade 5 & 6 fit skippers today who put on an inspiring skipping show to launch the Jump Rope for Heart Campaign at SMY! Information and registration packages went home with the students today. SMY's event day is on May 10th!

Humboldt Jersey Day

Tomorrow, students and staff across Canada are encouraged to wear jerseys or green and gold/yellow to show support for the victims and families of the Humboldt Broncos.

Dramatic Flare!

These 2/3W students are an expressive bunch! One of our drama activities today was called FREEZE! After counting to three, I gave small groups a situation or character they had to respond to while frozen!

Above, Matteo, Lucas and Breeona are singing in the shower!

These actors have just encountered a GIANT!

Afterwards, individual students came up to the front of the class to act out an emotion or feeling. Max guessed that Cameron was acting out the word "manly" with this pose!

In fact, this is Cameron's determined look! Totally convincing!

In the near future, we will begin working on plays in drama...should be lots of fun!

Britto Butterflies!

Many of the students completed their butterflies today in the style of Brazilian artist Romero Brittto! This time the lesson asked them to repeat five bright and bold patterns throughout their piece. Can you spot the patterns? Hopefully Mother Nature will get the message, we are ready for spring! I will post them all once they are completed!

Fantastic Fundraising!

Congratulations to Hannah and her sister Keiko who decided to fundraise last night and raised $55.25 towards Olivia and Mme Mathieu's Hair Donation Ottawa Team. Way to go, girls!

Cake Walk Joys!

The SMY Cake Walk was a HUGE success and everyone was a winner as we came together as a community and raised money for less fortunate children living in Kenya! Thank you to all the parents who brought in a cake for the occasion. As the children were filling out their ballots this morning, we had a terrific discussion about  probability and how they could use probability to increase their odds of winning a cake! The students got a chance to check out the yummy treats and to place their ballots during French class!

Here are the lucky ballot winners from our crew! Congratulations to Sofia, Lilah, Breeona, Braeden, Lucas, Goewra and Alrizha! Enjoy your goodies and remember to share!

Bboyizm Dance Company!

Last week, we were treated to a truly inspiring and jaw-dropping performance by the Bboyizm Dance Company. The troupe of five talented dancers entertained and educated the students and teachers about the evolution of street dancing though the 70's, 80's and 90's. At the end of the rousing hour, a few students (including our Garven) and teachers (Mrs. Frangione and Mr. H) got a chance to move and groove at the front of the gym.

In fact, BBoyizm was so impressed with Garven's moves that they hinted he might want to join their dance company in ten years or so! Here is a link to a video of Garven's dancing:
