Sox for Fox Friday!

Tomorrow is Run Day!

Thank you for all your participation this week! I have a feeling we just might meet our $1000 goal to donate to the Terry Fox Foundation! This also means that there might be a wacky challenge in Mrs. Armstrong's future!

Basketball and Jersey Thursday for Terry!

Where Do Clouds Come From?

This week in science we explored the mystery, “Where do clouds come from?” The students observed important clues, such as the fact that water changes from a liquid to a gas (even without boiling!). Here is Alice checking out warm water evaporating and condensing in her plastic cup (with a lid).

Base Ten Block Robots!

Mr. Pope shared this wonderful idea with me for an activity using base ten blocks! In small groups, the students (those who had finished their Ouch Recounts) were given a number in the hundreds that they had to represent using base ten blocks. Once they succeeded, they showed me their blocks and then were asked to show the same number a different way (for example, switch in 1 hundred block for 10 tens). Once they succeeded with this challenge, they had to make a robot using these blocks. They LOVED this!

Next, the students were given a Super Challenge! They had to figure out what number was made using 3 hundreds, 23 tens  and 16 ones. Once they succeeded (and they all eventually figured it out - 546!), the groups got to build yet another robot. Their designs were all varied and imaginative!

PJ Tuesday for Terry!

Wear your PJ's and bring a loonie!

If SMY Raises $1000 for Terry Fox, Mrs. Armstrong will...

Here is the list of 2/3W's suggestions for a potential challenge for Mrs. Armstrong to do if SMY meets the $1000 goal we have set for ourselves for our Terry Fox Fundraising Week:

..and 2/3W voted for "Run around the school 5 times in a snowsuit!"
Each class will submit their challenge, and Mrs. Armstrong will choose one to perform - if we reach our fundraising goal!

Happy 7th Birthday, Cameron!

Hats for Terry!

Thank you to the students who joined me with their crazy hats for Terry!

Collaborative Problem Solving on Hiatus until January!

Mr. Pope, Mrs. Frangione and I decided that today would be our last joint collaborative problem solving session until January. The noise and activity level got a little too kooky this afternoon so we will try revisiting this later in the school year!

Congratulations to Max's group who managed to figure out the Missing Numbers puzzle. It was a tough one. Max's group of three then went around and guided other groups along. Alice's group also figured it out. This number puzzle generated a good discussion about developing grit and perseverance!

Terry Fox Week!

Today was the kickoff assembly for SMY's Terry Fox Week which starts next Monday! With all the excitement, I forgot to send home the letter with all the details today. Look for it in your child's agenda tomorrow. Next week starts with Crazy Hat Monday and students are asked to bring a loonie or toonie.  Mrs. Armstrong surprised us all by announcing that if we managed to meet our school goal of $1000, she would be willing to do a challenge. She mentioned that in the past she has kissed a pig, dyed her hair and even put on a rock concert for the students. Each class gets to make one suggestion for a possible challenge. As principal, she gets to choose which one she prefers! Let's put our wacky thinking caps on and come up with a challenge she can't resist!

Transition Words

We have been learning about the importance of transition words (first, next, a little while later...) when writing recounts. I compared them to oil on your bike chain to make sure it rides smoothly. They make a paragraph flow! A few early finishers got a chance to use transition words in sentences on our bubble wall.

Hoppin' Poppin' Good Times!

The students learned about pushes and pulls during Science class this week by creating their very own Hopper Poppers! Today, the students suggested ways to make the poppers hop higher. We doubled up the elastic (excellent suggestion, Cameron!) and the hopper soared up crazy high! The students concluded that the pushing force was even greater with two elastics!

Curriculum Night!

A big thank you to the parents who came to Curriculum Night yesterday! It was lovely to see all of you, Thank you as well for signing up to follow our class blog! For parents who missed last night, the "Homework Resource Folder" went home with your child today with a letter inside describing its contents.

ISH!

Yesterday, I read the book Ish by Peter H. Reynolds. In the book, Ramon learns that creating and doing things ishly is far more freeing than always feeling like you have to get everything right. The students then drew some ishly self-portraits!
